Historic City Hall Wins Canadian Association of Heritage Professionals Award

The Canadian Association of Heritage Professionals (CAHP) has recognized the extensive restoration work done to the historic Calgary City Hall with a 2021 Award of Merit in the Conservation – Architecture category. RJC provided structural engineering, structural restoration, building science and heritage conservation services.

“When a heritage building is renewed, reused, and repurposed well, communities celebrate their collective history,” said CAHP president Christienne Uchiyama. “By conserving the city hall, one of the oldest sandstone structures on the prairies was preserved.”

Between 2016-2020, Calgary’s 109-year old Historic City Hall underwent an extensive exterior heritage rehabilitation. The rehabilitation of City Hall was the most significant heritage conservation project ever undertaken by the City of Calgary.

Built between 1907 and 1911, Historic City Hall has been Calgary’s seat of civic government for more than a century. Historic City Hall is a beautiful example of Calgary’s late Sandstone City era, and is a National, Provincial, and Municipal Heritage Resource. It is the only surviving city hall from its time in Western Canada, and it has been restored to a condition intended to serve Calgary for another 100 years.
