Jack Ady Cancer Centre

The first of three new radiation therapy projects for Alberta, the Jack Ady Cancer Centre makes it easier for southern Alberta residents to obtain radiation therapy – previously only available in Calgary and Edmonton.

RJC worked collaboratively with the prime consultant and sub-consultants in coordinating the design and detailing of the bunker and renovations to the Cancer Centre within the existing building.Placed in a restrictive site, the radiation treatment bunker was carefully designed to ensure the adjacent building was not adversely affected.

To aid in quality control for concrete materials during construction, RJC visited Ontario to tour a site where a radiation treatment bunker was being constructed.

RJC also engaged a concrete materials specialist who was involved in other Alberta Cancer Centre projects.

Due to the importance of radiation shielding, RJC made sure that the required concrete dimensional tolerances and densities were clearly outlined.Concrete specifications, mock-ups and a rigorous testing program were established to ensure concrete delivered to the site met the minimum densities required to shield radiation.
