John Kooymans

John a renowned engineer with over 30 years of experience in building design. He leads RJC's Structural Glass and Façade Engineering group, delivering excellence in structural glass systems, bridges and stairs. He is well known for his strong interest in cultural, retail, institutional and specialty glass projects, and is also respected for his strong background in engineering for performing arts and shopping centres.
A visionary with boundless creativity, John has created some of the most extraordinary glass structures in North America and beyond. Among his exemplary project portfolio are several major shopping centre expansions throughout Canada that include features such as the 70,000 sq. ft. skylight at Calgary Eaton Centre* (now called The Core) - the largest continuous skylight in North America. Also included in John's portfolio are: 'Crystals'*, a 500,000 square foot retail and entertainment space at MGM City Centre in Las Vegas; the glass stair, façade and structure* at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts in Toronto; the Ritz Carlton glass bridge in Toronto*; glass observation boxes (The Ledge*) at the Sears Tower in Chicago; and the glass skylight at the Halifax Shopping Centre in Nova Scotia and the glass rotunda entrance at Square One Shopping Centre.
John graduated from the University of Waterloo. He is a recognized expert in structural glass design, sought to speak at international glass symposiums in Europe and North America. He is a member of E1300 Glass Code Committee and on the editorial board for the Glass Structures and Engineering Journal.
