Queen of Peace Monastery
"A building founded on a rock" is how the new Queen of Peace Monastery is lovingly referred to by the 20 Dominican nuns that live there.
Their new home is a three-storey timber structure located in the Upper Squamish Valley with expansive views of the surrounding landscape.
The monastery houses residences on the upper floors, a conference area, library, refectory, kitchen and various activity rooms at the lower levels.
The chapel wing features a beautiful open layout with glulam frames supporting the timber roof and floor to ceiling glass overlooking the valley.
Careful layout of all the exposed structural elements help to create an atmosphere of serenity and quiet contemplation.
Without access to a water supply for fire suppression, the structural design incorporates exposed wood members oversized to allow a one hour Fire Resistance Rating (FRR).
