Innovation Crossing is a new interpretive centre within Calgary’s Heritage Park Historical Village.

The 3,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art centre showcases how far energy advancements in renewables have progressed from the traditional harnessing of nonrenewable energy into a marriage of both types of resources.

This single-storey building is composed of a main exhibition hall with back-of-house service areas and a south facing exterior patio.

RJC provided the structural engineering for the Centre which features an exposed mass timber structural system designed to blend seamlessly with the existing historical vernacular of the park and to incorporate “green” technology.

The timber trusses showcase the 2ply 8"x 16" Douglas Fir rough sawn mass timber truss chords with exposed steel connection hardware, a pulley-inspired king post deviator and a Dowel Laminated Timber (DLT) roof deck.

The deviator draws inspiration from coal car wheels or Derrek rigging pulleys in the park to showcase the perpetual progress of natural resources in Alberta.
