Machias Seal Island Lighthouse Restoration
Machias Seal Island is located in the lower Bay of Fundy, approximately ten miles west of Grand Manan Island.
The island is small, but a notably significant geographical rocky outcrop located within the shared international fishing waters and shipping lanes of the Atlantic Ocean between Canada and the US.
The Canadian Coast Guard has maintained and operated the historically significant structure for well over 100 years.
Constructed in 1915, the current lighthouse (third generation on the tiny island) is a traditional reinforced concrete octagonal tower that stands approximately 60 feet tall from its base to the gallery slab.
RJC was commissioned to assess and identify required repairs and protection strategies so as to extend the operational life span of the lighthouse.
Issues ranging from moisture-related damage, environmental deterioration, including carbonation, ASR attack and corrosion were all addressed.
