The Independent
The Independent is a striking 23-storey development in Vancouver's Mount Pleasant neighbourhood featuring residential and amenity space, office space and retail including a Nester’s grocery store at-grade.
The transit-oriented mixed-use development is designed to embody the surrounding neighbourhood and is topped with trees to symbolize the height of first-growth forests in Vancouver's Mount Pleasant skyline.
This reinforced concrete mixed-use project provided many interesting challenges to the design team.
The project is a combination of four buildings configured into four distinct building components in one, the main tower, along with the Kingsway, Broadway and Watson “blocks.” The site’s triangular shape in combination with overlapping uses of residential, retail, office, parking and amenities, all on a sloping site, provided for a complex structure.
RJC worked closely with the architects to minimize the many column transfers throughout the project to accommodate the various architectural uses.
