Vancouver Fire Hall No. 17
The previous Vancouver Fire Hall 17 located at 7070 Knight Street in Vancouver was constructed in 1954 as a three-bay, brick and concrete two-storey fire hall.
Due to the aging of the fire hall, the building no longer adequately met the current structural, operational and space needs. In its place, the new Vancouver Fire Hall 17 is the second largest training fire hall for VFRS and specializes in HazMat response for the city. The new fire hall has four drive-through apparatus bays, a full size hose/ training tower, a training yard and accommodation for a two crew operation. In addition, the upgrade includes on-grade parking for eight vehicles and space for a genset, garbage/ recycling area and fueling provisions. In order for the fire hall to meet the seismic requirements of Canada’s National Building code, the building has a stout reinforced concrete structure with a structural steel frame for positions for the third-level.
The main building is clad in brick and metal panels.
The Vancouver Fire Hall 17 is targeting both Passive House certification and LEED® Gold certification.
Due to the complex requirements of this facility, the team divided the building into two separately certifiable Passive House zones: Zone A (living areas) and Zone B (drive-through apparatus bays and a full size hose/ training tower) which will both run at different temperatures throughout the year.If approved, Vancouver Fire Hall 17 will become the first fire hall in North America to attain Passive House certification. This facility is one of 16 pilot projects under the Canada Green Building Council Zero Emissions Framework.Vancouver Fire Hall No.17 achieved LEED® Zero Carbon Certification and is the first fire hall in Canada to earn the Zero Carbon Building (ZCB) certification and the first project in BC to be certified.
Once complete the station will offer a 99.7% reduction in operational carbon emissions compared to the existing Fire Hall 17.
